Waterford City
A Viking citynThe oldest city in Ireland, Vikings created Waterford City in County Waterford due to its sheltered bay and strategic location on the Suir River. The city's landmark is a nod to its Viking past - and sits at the heart of what's known as The Viking Triangle: Reginald's Tower. The oldest building in Ireland has been in continuous use for over 800 years.nnThe perfect mix of old and new, city and countrynFound at the head of Waterford Harbour, the city is very pretty - and although it's known for its history, it's actually a contemporary city with a lively restaurant, bar, independent shopping and festival scene.nnIf you have time, the Waterford Greenway (Ireland's longest greenway) is one of the highlights of Waterford City, a beautiful way to see the area safely on foot or on two wheels - and with the whole family. Seek out the city's speciality, the Waterford Blaa - a soft white bread roll which is traditionally filled with hot bacon or served with local butter.
