Hogmanay in Gretna Green
Day 1 - Relax on your holiday coach and enjoy the scenery and with ample refreshment stops on the way to Gretna. Check in for 3-nights with porterage and welcome drink on arrival. Join the hotel management this evening for a drinks reception followed by dinner and in-house entertainment. DBB plus two light lunches.nnDay 2 - After breakfast it's just a short drive for a morning visit at the award-winning Devil's Porridge Museum which tells the story of HM Factory Gretna, the greatest munitions factory on earth in WW1, where the devil's porridge (or cordite, an explosive) was mixed. Gain an insight into the extraordinary lives of the Munitions Girls who worked there, whose contribution to the war effort helped women to achieve the vote. Pop back to the hotel for an included light lunch and then this afternoon either relax in the hotel or board the coach for a short visit into historic Dumfries, Queen of the South', which sits on the banks of the River Nith, straddled by lovely russet-hued sandstone bridges. The town has also been home to a number of famous individuals throughout its history including Peter Pan author JM Barrie and British Formula One racing driver David Coulthard, but its most famous former resident is Robert Burns who spent his final years here. Happy New Year!nnDay 3 - Enjoy a lie-in and a relaxed start with time today to explore Gretna at your leisure. Entrance is included to the Famous Blacksmiths Gretna Green Experience. Fall in love with the world's greatest love story and dive into the history of true love and marriage at this state-of-the-art immersive attraction that takes you through centuries of Gretna Green, from the 1200s through to the scandal of the traditional Gretna Green elopement wedding to the iconic Blacksmith's anvil that is typical of marriage ceremonies of the modern day. There is also plenty of opportunity for a spot of shopping (10% off at the on-site retail outlets for hotel residents). A light lunch is included in the hotel and this evening's dinner is an Asian buffet to spice up your New Year.
