Itinerary
Summer Break in South Devon
Day 1 - After joining your holiday coach, head to the west country with suitable stops for lunch and refreshments. Arrive at your hotel in Dawlish for 4 nights with porterage and a welcome tea/coffee on arrival. DBB. Enjoy an included pre-dinner drink each night in the hotel (beer, wine, sherry or soft drink - one per person)\n\nDay 2 - 4 At leisure in Dawlish with two included excursions and one optional excursion\n\nThe traditional Devon seaside town of Dawlish is home to a wonderfully long golden sandy beach, perfect for a gentle stroll or even a swim. The town itself has plenty of interesting shops and a great range of places to eat and drink. The brook that runs through the centre of a wide-open green, The Lawn, is home to the famous black swans which have been residents in Dawlish since at least the early 1900s. Neighbouring Dawlish Warren is also a popular holiday resort, best known for its blue-flag beach and Nature Reserve, a 1½ mile long sand spit which runs along the mouth of the Exe estuary. The Visitor Centre has a range of displays which tells you more about the area and is open most days (free entry). Part of the South West Coast Path goes between Dawlish and Dawlish Warren\n\nINCLUDED EXCURSIONS\nPowderham Castle\nPowderham, on the banks of the River Exe, is a magnificent fortified manor and home to the Earl and Countess of Devon. It was built in 1391 by Sir Philip Courtenay and was created as a family home, a landmark and a space for community life to come together. It has been much adapted with Tudor, Georgian and Victorian enhancements over the last six centuries and you will discover its colourful, rich past, its stories and secrets on a fascinating guided tour through the state rooms. The staircase, hall, music room and master bedroom of the house were used as locations for the 1993 film 'The Remains of the Day'. Afterwards take a stroll through the grounds and gardens from the formality of the Rose Terrace to the wilderness of the American Garden. There is a café on site for snacks and light refreshments. Head back to the hotel with the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to explore and enjoy lovely Dawlish and Dawlish Warren, both close to the hotel\n\nExeter & Cream Tea River Exe Cruise\nHead to Exeter this morning one of the most vibrant, attractive and historically interesting cities in England - a small city that packs a big punch! Pre-dating the arrival of the Romans in AD 50, Exeter's history is rich and long. Discover one thousand years of wonder and the awe-inspiring beauty of one of Europe's most magnificent cathedrals (admission fee applies - approx. £7.50 pp in 2024). Head to Exeter's Historic Quayside, one of the most attractive areas of the city, popular with locals and visitors alike for its fascinating history, interesting architecture and lively cafes and restaurants. Head back to the coast to the traditional seaside town of Exmouth to join a gentle circular cruise (approx. 1 hour 15 minutes) along the tranquil waters of the River Exe. Starting in Exmoor, the River Exe is Devon's main river and flows for more than 50 miles and up to one mile wide in places through Tiverton and Exeter before it meets the sea in Exmouth. This award-winning stretch of water is home to a wide range of wildlife and migrating birds which can often be spotted. The boat has an indoor heated lower deck with large windows for great viewing and an outside upper deck for plenty of fresh air. Your Skipper will give you a live commentary on the history of the area, the beautiful sights and the resident and visiting wildlife. During your trip you will be served with fresh Devon Scones smothered with strawberry jam and locally made clotted cream and a tea or coffee all without having to leave your seat!\n\nOPTIONAL EXCURSION\nRegency Sidmouth\nPoet Laureate, John Betjeman, described Sidmouth as a town caught in timeless charm, after being captivated by its beautiful gardens, leisurely walks, clean beaches and Regency history. This lovely seaside town is nestled beneath majestic red cliffs, a town like no other, located in East Devon and full of friendly faces and beautiful scenery, The dramatic cliffs, fresh sea air and the abundance of attractions makes it a wonderful place to recharge the batteries.\n\nDay 5 - After breakfast, return homewards with suitable stops en-route, arriving back at your local joining points early to mid-evening
