Through the centuries, it has played host to Cistercian monks at prayer, 19th-century philosophers and politicians. If any of Forde Abbey's 12th-century Cistercian monks were to return today they might well recognise their quarters, their kitchen and refectories, and their chapter house. It is rare to see so much of a medieval monastery preserved as an integral part of a private dwelling. Home to the highest powered fountain in the country, the award-winning gardens include topiary-lined vistas, colourful herbaceous borders, a superb Victorian walled garden, an arboretum, and a bog garden. Designed to incorporate both the formal and informal aspects of garden design, the straight lines give way to meandering pathways the further you head away from the house, with plenty of benches and seating to admire the views along the way. Entrance included to house & garden.\n\nRiver Exe Cream Tea Cruise & Exmouth\nA cruise on Devon's longest river, the River Exe is a must whilst in Devon This six-mile cruise travels the peaceful waters up past Powderham Castle and along to where the river ends on Exmouth's traditional seafront. One of the favourite sights on the water has to be the resident seals, frequently seen enjoying the area for its food and sunbathing hotspots!\n\nStuart Line boats have an outside upper deck with plenty of fresh air and cosy blankets to snuggle under whilst you soak up the scenery. Also there is an indoor heated lower decks with huge panoramic windows ideal for viewing the all the sights as you cruise past. On board you will find a fully licenced bar serving a range of hot and cold refreshments and snacks. The boats maintain traditional features, but are also modern, exceptionally clean and well maintained and toilets are also on board. During the trip, your Skipper will give you live, informative and enjoyable commentary, ensuring that you get to see everything this beautiful river has to offer.
